Lawrenceville is the second oldest city in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It was incorporated on December 15, 1821, by the Georgia General Assembly. William Maltbie, the first postmaster of the city, suggested its present name. The city is named after an American naval commander in the War of 1812, James Lawrence. The first permanent courthouse of Lawrenceville was constructed in 1824. The present courthouse, however, was built in 1885. The Rhodes Jordan Park and the Lawrenceville City Park are the ideal locations to spend your leisure hours. There are several historically significant buildings in Lawrenceville. These include the Lawrenceville Female Seminary and the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. Lawrenceville Ghost Tours are conducted by the Aurora Theatre and are popular among locals. Shopping facilities are available at the Lawrenceville Mall Shopping Center, the Lawrenceville Corners Shopping Center, the Lawrenceville West Shopping Center, and the Scenic Plaza Shopping Center.
